We have a Winter Storm Watch here in
Kentucky and we thought it would be a good time to refresh on some
winter safety tips.
Here are some of the popular
phrases used when dealing with winter:
Winter Weather Advisory. Simply put,
winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant
inconveniences and may be hazardous. Use caution when out and
Winter Storm Watch. This means that
winter storm conditions are possible within the next 36 to 48
hours. If you are currently in a watch area,
you should have a winter storm plan and stay
informed about weather conditions.
Winter Storm Warning. This is a
serious warning. It includes life-threatening, severe winter
conditions have begun or will begin within 24 hours. People in a
warning area should take precautions immediately. It is best to
stay inside and off the roads.
If you have to leave the house,
remember these safety tips:
Dress in several layers of lightweight
clothing. Always have mittens and a hat that covers your ears.
Wear waterpoof boots to stay dry and
Keep your gas tank full and a disaster
kit in your car.
Disaster kit should include:
At least one gallon of water
3 days worth of food
Flashlight and batteries
First aid kit
If you have animals, keep these
tips in mind:
Bring your pets inside during cold winter weather. Move other
animals or livestock to sheltered areas and make sure they have
access to non-frozen drinking water and dry blankets or hay.
If the animals are outside, make sure their access to food and
water is not blocked by snow drifts, ice or other obstacles.
Antifreeze is a deadly poison. Do not leave it anywhere where
animals could injest it.
